The present Ionia County Historical Society was first organized in 1974 specifically to "purchase, restore, and preserve the John C. Blanchard House." During the first few years, exterior renovations were completed, and room-by-room restoration was begun. The work continues, funded by local contributions, grants, and income from special events such as the annual Historic Ionia Home Tour each spring.

As the years have passed, the Historical Society has expanded it's role in the community, and has taken custodianship of local historical collections and archives. In 1994 the Ionia County Museum Committee was established to administer the artifacts in the Society's collection that are not appropriate to the John C. Blanchard house restoration. Many of these artifacts are now on display in our Museum in the basement of the Blanchard House and the Carriage House on the property, and work progresses to develop and formalize the Museum.

Membership in the Historical Society is open to any interested person, local or not. All that's required is an interest in local history, and accordance with our misison and by-laws. We work closely with other area historical groups and museums to promote and preserve our shared heritage.

The Society meets the evening of the First Wednesday of every month, usually at the Blanchard House. Each meeting consists of a few minutes of official business, committee and event reports, etc.) and then a special program - usually a guest speaker. After the program we enjoy a social hour with refreshments and fellowship. Guests are always welcome! Please come for a personal tour of the House and the Museum.
